50 States in 50* Days - Arizona Athlete Agent Regulation

The next stop in our tour of athlete agents in the 50 states is Arizona. The 48th state is another one of the Uniform Athlete Agent Act jurisdictions. The Arizona Uniform Athlete Agent Act can be found at Title 15 (Education), Chapter 13 (Universities and Related Institutions), Article 10 of the Arizona Revised Statutes.

The Arizona Secretary of State administers athlete agent registration. The cost to register in Arizona is a very affordable $20. Unlike Alabama, there is no discount if you have already registered in another UAAA state. However, at $20, who's complaining? Also, if you registered in Arizona first, then Alabama, it would save you $100 compared to registering first in Alabama then going to Arizona(I'll even do the math for you - AL $200 + AZ $20 = $220 / but if you do AZ $20 + AL at the discounted $100 = $120). I know it sounds ridiculous, but if you are going to register in a number of states, it would be worth it to take the time to find out how you may be able to save some money. Remember that in most of the states, in order to take advantage of having filed in another state, you must have filed with the previous state within 6 months. Unless you want to be constantly renewing registrations, I would try to bunch them up as best as you can.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Uniform Athlete Agent Act isn't always uniform. For instance, violations in Arizona that are misdemeanors may be felonies in Alabama. Or there may be a difference in the amount of civil penalties or how civil penalties are calculated (is each day a new offense?).

The Secretary of State also issues an annual report that provides the number of new registrations along with the current number of registrations administered. In 2006 there were 27 new registrations and 112 total athlete agent registrations administered by the Secretary of State.

There are nine agents certified by the NFLPA that call Arizona home.

The Arizona State Athletic Department also requires the registration of athlete agents and has a five-page memo outlining the ASU Athlete Agent Registration process.

Tomorrow in the 50 States in 50* Days series is Arkansas.
